49th Armored Division Unit Rings
49th Armored Division “Lone Star”
The 49th Armored Division was established following World War II when the Army National Guard was allowed to put together two armored divisions.
These two new divisions are the 49th in Texas and the 50th in New Jersey.
The Lone Star Division was activated in October 1961 at Dallas and went back to state control in August 1962. The division was deactivated in 1968 and re-established into three separate brigades, the 36th, 71st and 72nd. The division was reorganized on 1 November 1973, with its headquarters at Camp Mabry, in Austin Texas.

On 18 July 2004 the division was re-activated and again established as the 36th Infantry Division. Prior to its reorganization, the 49th was culminated to the U.S. Army III Corps and flagged as the
lone fully functional, reserve component, armored division in the United States Army.
The 49th Division’s objective was to help support an open and free political process in addition to maintaining a stable and secure environment to encourage resettlement of displaced residents. The division was also assigned with encouraging and influencing the development of a professional armed
force in Bosnia from 1999 to 2002.
On 1 May 2004, the Lone Star Division was officially deactivated and was reassigned as the 36th Infantry Division.
