18th Military Police Brigade Unit Rings
The 18th Military Police Brigade has a rich history,
as it’s been around for over 40 years, having its
members serve in the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm
and Operation Provide Comfort.
Today, this military police brigade is stationed in Sembach,
Germany, but it has subordinate companies and battalions on call all throughout Germany,
as one of its main purposes is to provide law enforcement to the U.S Army Europe.
Early History of the 18th Military Police Brigade
The birth date of this brigade is the 23rd of March 1966, when it was activated in Maryland at Fort Meade.
The unit’s insignia was received by the Brigade on the 1st of June 1966, three months before it was sent into battle. On September 7th 1966 was the date when the 18th Military Police Brigade was deployed in Vietnam, to Vung Tau.

Only days after it got there, it assumed control over all the U.S military police units stationed in Vietnam. With this taking over, the brigade had now more than 5,000 members that had to perform a number of missions, ranging from the evacuation of POWs to escorting convoys, and of course, maintaining law and order throughout Vietnam.
The 18th Military Police Brigade during the Cold War
After the Vietnam War ended, the brigade was deactivated (20th of March 1973) and only years later it was reactivated and redesigned – 1985 to be more precise. That year, on the 16th of August, the 18th Military Police Brigade was reactivated in Frankfurt, Germany.
The last Cold War years, 1990 and 1991 saw the brigade providing support for V Corps in Operation Provide Comfort and VII Corps during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield.
After the Cold War officially ended, the brigade was not deactivated but it remained stationary in Germany, certain elements of it were deployed to support Operation Joint Endeavor and Operation Provide Promise in Yugoslavia.
Recent History of the 18th Military Police Brigade
Because the brigade became renowned for its rapid deployment capacity, 1999 saw it deployed to the Balkans. Companies of the Brigade were deployed in Bosnia, Albania and Kosovo to support various operations that were conducted by the US Army.
The 22nd of March 2003 is an important date the Brigade’s recent history, as this date celebrates the Brigade’s deployment in Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I. Even if it was deployed in Iraq for only one year, during that year the Brigade established POW holding areas, helped establish the new Iraqi Police Service, confiscated over 7500 illegal weapons, trained 10000 Iraqi Police Officers, and the list goes on and on.
The Brigade’s companies also supported Operation Iraqi Freedom II starting 2007,
again training Iraqi Police officers, offering support, logistics, and judicial integration.
