The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment 
is one with a rich and long history
in the United States Army.
Due to its long list of achievements, the Regiment’s
nickname is “the Blackhorse Regiment”.
Even if originally, it was a cavalry
regiment, today it is a heavy brigade combat team.
The Blackhorse Regiment has been a major part in almost all past and recent wars,
conflicts, and military operations that took place during the last 100 years,
gathering a vast combat experience, which makes it one of the
most respected regiment in the modern US Army.
Early History of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment
The date when this heroic Regiment was born is the 2nd of February 1901. The location: Fort Myer.
The World War 2 saw the 11th Cavalry Regiment stationed in California, but, from 16th of January 1940 to 27th of February the regiment was moved to Fort Ord and then to Camp Clayton for training, followed by a participation in maneuvers at Fort Lewis and then back to California at Presidio of Monterey.

From 1940 to 1942 the Regiment kept being moved and assigned to various Armed Forces, but 1942, saw the 11th ACR R in Fort Benning preparing to be de-activated and reorganized. This happened the 15th of July 1942 when the 11th Cavalry Regiment was transferred to the 11th Armored Regiment.
However, 1948 saw the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment reorganized and reassembled.
The Vietnam War saw the Blackhorse arriving in Vung Tau, commanded by Colonel William Cobb. During the Regiment’s stay in Vietnam, they took part in a number of operations, all successful. The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment is credited for participating in a many operations during the Vietnam War, including Operation Cedar Falls, Operation Junction City, Operation Manhattan, Operation Kitty hawk, Operation Quicksilver, Operation Fargo, Operation Adairsville and Operation Alcorn Cove.
11th Armored Cavalry Regiment Today
Today, the Regiment’s main mission is to provide the United States Army with capable and lethal forces that are ready to take on any mission, as the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment is the main maneuver unit in the US Army.
The Blackhorse Regiment trains the future US Army soldiers in the rigors of battle at the National Training Center in California, right in the middle of the Mojave Desert. The standards required are higher than the ones required by the rest of the Army, which results in personnel highly trained and capable of taking on any mission, anytime, anywhere!
The modern 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment consists of two main squadrons, 1st Squadron and 2nd Squadron and a Support Squadron, alongside a Headquarters and Headquarters Troop.
Throughout the ages, the Regiment’s motto, “Allons”, French for “Let’s Go” has been proved to be accurate and to describe perfectly the men and women serving in it. Since it was activated as a horse cavalry, the Regiment underwent changes, deactivations and activations, but it constantly evolved alongside ever-changing warfare, only to become one of the most respected and honored Regiments in the United States Army.
