Farewell to a Hero
When he turned around before he entered the car, he gave me that familiar smile, that smile that lights up a room whenever he entered, that smile I could never say no to, that smile that always gave me butterflies in the pit of my stomach and nearly make me miss a heart beat.
It was that smile that showed me the pathway into his heart and soul that last smile will stay with me forever in my dreams.
Some days just on wakening and before I open my eyes, I stretch and yawn to start a new day and just for that split second I forget that I wont be opening my eyes to glance at my beloved and stare at him while he still sleeps.
I don’t have to slip out from under the quilt so as not to waken him, to bring his breakfast and to see him smile when his daughter runs in to the room to get her daily cuddle from her hero dad and play with the military ring he wears on those powerful but gentle hands.
Some days go by in a blur the pain in my heart so tangible, I feel as though it’s being ripped out.
I go through the motions of living without being present and I feel lost and alone fighting myself and god.
How could such bad things happen to such a good person a wonderful hero?
My lights are on but there’s no one at home and the thoughts of having to go through my whole life never to feel that way ever again is unbearable.
I look at his military ring and think of the many brave acts that this hero of mine carried out while he was deployed in Iraq and I certainly want to give him a hero’s farewell.
Farewell to a hero!
I catch a glimpse of my daughter sitting playing with her dads guitar, she takes a sideways glance at me and smiles, it makes my heart leap, I know that smile and it puts my heart at peace, it lets me breath easy, it gives me solace and peace of mind and I can smile back.
Life can be good again, my heart will mend but I will never forget.
