In 1848, the Revenue Cutter Lawrence arrived in its new homeport, San Francisco, as a representative of the federal government. This would be the first presence of the United States Coast Guard in the Pacific. The list of assignments was long – including those of judge and customs agents. The crew of the Revenue Cutter Lawrence would do whatever it took to maintain some sense of order during this very chaotic period on the West Coast.

Today, the Coast Guard’s Pacific Area Headquarters do not operate from a cutter, but instead from Alameda, California on Coast Guard Island. This is located just across the bay from San Francisco. In spite of what many people may think, the operations of the Coast Guard are not limited to the southern part of the East Coast of the United States. The Coast Guard is responsible for 74 million square miles of PACAREA. This area runs from the Arctic Circle to South American and west to the Far East. Because of streamlining measures, the units and staff of the 11^th District are now part of the Pacific Area staff. This includes Coast Guard units in California, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada.

Coast Guard Island isn’t just home to the Pacific Area Headquarters, though. You’ll also find the Joint Interagency Task Force West, the Maritime Defense Zone Pacific, MSO San Francisco Bay, Maintenance and Logistics Command Pacific, and four High Endurance Cutters. Over 27,000 personnel of various active duty, reserve, and civilian distinctions are here. There are a total of ten High Endurance Cutters, six Medium Endurance Cutters, 14 HH-60 Jayhawks, 27 HH-65A Dolphins, 2 Polar Icebreakers, 29 WPB’s, and 12 Buoy tenders.

The inherent, diverse missions which the Coast Guard undertakes require the highest level of commitment and service. For active duty Coast Guard members assigned here, they can be on patrol in the Persian Gulf or breaking through the ice in the Arctic Ocean. They escort supply vessels to research bases, provide training for other maritime nations, and a variety of other tasks.

The United States Coast Guard is probably quite similar to other Coast Guards around the world in so far as that their main purpose is to protect the environment, the public and of course the economy and security on the nation. It has jurisdiction in both domestic and international waters and in wartime will work under the Department of the Navy but in peace time it works under the Department of Homeland Security.

The Coast Guard patrols the sea around our nation but also the inland waterways which may be at risk from narcotics dealers and other undesirables.

Coast Guard Ring

The Coast Guard ring is very similar to all the other military rings in that they can be customized with all the personal and military details of the member.

Quite a few of the Coast Guard personnel have served in overseas campaigns and they like to wear the coast guard ring to reflect this.

Coast Guard Ring and the Motto;

Like all other departments of the Armed Forces that have mottos the Coast Guard is no different. Their motto is “Semper Paratus” which is the Latin for “Always Prepared” and we are sure glad that we have them to protect us from evil. The Coast Guards roots stem back to August the fourth 1790 when Alexander Hamilton established it under the Dept of the Treasury and was actually the only Navy Force that the United States had until the re-establishing on the US. Navy in 1798.

One of their functions in that time was to address the situation with regard to piracy which was wreaking havoc on the high seas and to assist and other vessel that might be in any difficulty.

They are often referred to as the 1^st Fleet but this is only an informal way of referring to them as they were in essence the only protection during the years from 1790 to 1798 for our coastline and other sea going vessels.

Modern Coast Guard Ring

In 1915 or around that time the merging of United States Life Saving Service and that of the Revenue Cutter Service formed the United States Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard are not just a docile department, they have taking part in conflicts and campaigns like the War of 1812, the American Civil War and World War Two where they operated under the US Navy.
